Prairie Tea

A bit of a strange winter here in Vermont, with no snow and a few too many grey days, got me to thinking about the Kansas prairie. My sister Willow sent me some beautiful pictures of a hike she and her friends took this past Fall near Manhattan, KS, which reminded me of how dear the prairie is to me. I was inspired to do this piece because I have so much to thank the Kansas prairie for - for morning walks and evening strolls with loved ones, little animals in the grasses, hawks soaring overhead, the never-ending expanse that stretches out around you, the seasons of earthy color, and finally, the peace that the prairie has planted in my heart that I carry forth with me wherever I go. Enjoy!

The Cave

Here is a watercolor that I did recently for a contest through the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators. The contest goes like this: While walking home from school Ben takes a detour through the woods and is caught in a sudden snowstorm. Cold and afraid, he ducks into a cave for shelter. Once inside the cave, he's amazed to find....Illustrate what he finds. And I did!

Walking

Greetings from a winter wonderland here in Vermont!

I've recently been thinking about family and how incredibly important and dear they are to me and how each and every one of them has shaped my life. More specifically I was thinking about Papa, my dad who lives in Kansas with my mom and twin brothers who are still at home. Papa and I have always gone on walks together around our prairie acreage and enjoy those moments being together and loving nature in it's peaceful, captivating and intriguing ways. I love walking out in that real world with Papa, noticing the little bugs in the grasses, picking out the different families of plants and growing things, and watching the birds flitting from tree to tree and feeling the wind on our skin. Papa always says the wind is the earth breathing, I love thinking of it in that way. We both have a sense of awe about the natural world - and I always love sharing that with him. With all of that in mind, this painting created itself of those times. Enjoy!

Seasons Greetings!

Hello Everyone!

It's snowing today here in Vermont and the creative spirit is on the go here at my place! As my two cats, Simone and Stirling are curled up asleep, I've been painting seasonal ornaments! I've used a mixtured of watercolors and ink pen (my signature medium) and added in touches of acrylic and gold paint. I love how they have turned out and would like to share them with you! Here are a few samples! Have a safe and happy holiday season!

"My Evening Mountains"

Katie's most recent creation - A tribute to a quiet evening in my home of the Vermont mountains. The pumpkin illuminates a brilliant orange in the evening light, while the little red fox and field mouse watch the twilight descend over the tiny village nestled in the mountains. The birds too are watching from their twiggy perches, and the Moon graces the sky with it's bright face.

Thank You!

In celebration of the change of season, the quietness of the evenings, the melting of the leaves from green to crimson and the crisp pumpkin air! My newest painting - "September Waltz"

I want to take a moment to thank all of the wonderfully supportive people in my life. I have not chosen the easiest, most steady or lucrative path to follow - but without this artful direction, I would have no direction at all.
Firstly my customers - not only because they keep my bills paid :) and keep me creating new and fresh paintings, but also for their incredible support and words of advice, wisdom and inspiration! You support me in more ways than you know! And it is truly gratifying to send someone home with a piece of my artwork that has touched their heart. Thank You!
Secondly - my family of course! Their love is never ending, and so much of my inspiration and basis of my art comes from those roots of support. Family meals, coffee with sisters, walks with my father through the Kansas prairie, my brothers' computer wizarding, my mother-in-law's flower garden and lunch with my Mom. Such sacred moments to me!
Lastly I want to thank my Sandman, my husband, for his never ending belief in beauty and goodness.
Thank you Love - you keep me going.
